The study, conducted at the University of Arizona, Tucson, indicates Pycnogenol® may serve as a potent adjunct to prescription medications for the 20 million people in the Unites States living with diabetes.

What's the deal with cell phones?

I bought a new cell phone last week. I was reading the user guide and other information that came along with it, and I was surprised to find that in five different places in all of this literature, were warnings that cell phones may be harmful to your health. Perhaps these warnings have always been there and I was oblivious to them before, nonetheless, I noticed them. Of course, it didn't come right out and say that they were dangerous, it was the same FDA babble, "not proven to be harmful… yada, yada, yada." However, right there, in five different places, the cell phone company was telling me that my cell phone might be hazardous to my health.

Here's another article highlighting the debate about cell phones and their potential effect on health:

Prep your pet for the coming summer months!

The days are longer; it's starting to get hot... which means that summer is fast approaching! Summer can be a fun time for your pet - and for you too! Make sure you prep your pet for the coming summer months. Here are just a few ways to keep them healthy this summer:

Hopefully, your pets will be getting more exercise this summer, so make sure to give your pets their PetHealth™ OPC (code: 5602) every day to maintain healthy joints and keep their free radical defenses at their peak.

Good nutrition starts with a healthy diet, so make sure you feed your pets a consistent, well-balanced diet. PetHealth Multivitamin Formulas (for dogs code: 5606 and for cats, code: 5608) provide key vitamins and minerals to assist their bodies to work, grow and develop properly.

Hot pavement can wreak havoc on their pad and paws, so be sure to have some PetHealth Pad & Paw Balm (code: 5616) at the ready. It's specially formulated for rough, dry and cracked paws, with jojoba oil, sweet almond seed oil and sunflower seed oil to help soothe and protect.

Your pet's ear canal can become built up with dirt, wax and debris, which can contribute to that annoying head shaking and scratching. Keep your pet's ears clean with the PetHealth Ear Wash (code: 5618), specially formulated to gently cleanse and moisturize the ear canal, without drying or irritating the ear.

If your dog is spending a lot of time outside, chances are good they're gonna get pretty dirty. PetHealth Hypoallergenic Shampoo (code: 5612) and PetHealth Medicated Shampoo (code: 5614) are the perfect remedies for a filthy dog. PetHealth shampoos are specially formulated to help the skin maintain its natural moisture barrier: the Hypoallergenic Shampoo moisturizes and conditions the skin and coat with honey, aloe, oatmeal and lavender, while the Medicated Shampoo eases flaking and itching from dry skin, and is perfect for problematic areas of the skin.

Finally, a word on those pesky insects. Mosquitoes can pose a serious problem for pets – heartworms. Mosquito Magic® Wipes (one of our partner stores; on the home page click on "Home & Garden" > "Insect Repellents") are a great tool to have around, especially if you are going away on vacation, playing by the pool or just walking around the park. Mosquito Magic Wipes are safe for you and your pets, helping to keep the mosquitoes at bay.

"Weight Loss Aids Bought On Internet Might Harm Your Heart."

I am sure some of you have read the article on weight loss supplement ingredients being dangerous. Most herbs enjoy a remarkably good safety record but on rare occasion, contraindications and interactions with drugs and/or foods do occur. News outlets and pharmaceutical companies are using this fact to arrive at a totally misleading conclusion, creating fear and uncertainty in the minds of consumers.

The accusation that some of the ingredients in weight loss supplements present a safety risk is based on searching engine queries (such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) looking for one single reported “association between the ingredients and cardiac problems.” Conveniently, no further research or testing is done on the validity of the reported issue. Most of these reports are singular occurrences and have not, and most likely will not, occur in any of the millions of customers that use supplements. Another point is that the article was published in conjunction with a pharmaceutical company that is in direct competition with the weight loss supplement industry.

As you all know our supplements list possible contraindications directly on the label as well as urge you to consult your physician before use.

Upon discussion of this weight loss ingredient issue with Dr. Mark Lange, he brought up a very good point…Maybe the cardiologists doing this study should exert some effort in their field of expertise, where this month’s Lancet reports 800,000 people died unnecessarily and half a million major strokes were caused by taking beta blockers, the cornerstone treatment for heart disease since the 1970s. In comparison to pharmaceutical drugs, dietary supplements are remarkably safe. Read on for more:

But there's more good news. If you don't want to wait to catch it during a scheduled air time, we have posted it on MaTv as the featured video. Oh, and if you didn't catch the local article here in Greensboro, there's more on the relationship with Kimora and what's to come in the future.

Canadian Natural Health Products are Under Immediate Threat

Many Canadians rely upon natural health products for their health. These products are endangered and consumers need to act now to save them.

Since 2004 when the Natural Health Product Regulations were introduced, natural health products have been increasingly threatened. The new Regulations were Health Canada’s response to consumer demands for the government to protect their access to natural health products. The Regulations have had the opposite effect. To “legally” sell a health product the new Regulations impose a licensing requirement. The problem is that 60% of licence applications have failed. These have been the “easy” applications. Expectations are that 70-75% of applications will fail. For the NHP Community this means that 75% of NHPs we rely upon for our health will become illegal.

Is the FDA controlled by big Pharma?

A couple days ago I told you about pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline’s attempt to classify weight loss claims for dietary supplements as disease claims. Many believe this is an effort to quash competition from the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Mark Lange, Market America’s director of quality control, made this observation about the report…

I’m piecing together what is a disturbing trend – big pharma influencing the FDA to declare certain dietary supplements as drugs. Many dietary supplements are effective in the treatment of diseases (although we are prohibited from making such claims). Pharma develops a drug based upon historical use of a dietary supplement and then petitions FDA to ban dietary supplements containing that ingredient because they are now drugs and cannot be sold without a prescription. Case in point – red rice yeast. Red rice yeast in the past reduced cholesterol levels because it contained one of the statin drugs, namely lovastatin. The FDA made an administrative decision that this dietary supplement was a regulable drug, and thus removed it from the unregulated shelves of the health food store. Now resveratrol and a particular form of vitamin B6 are under similar review.

Ultimately, well-informed consumers of dietary supplements come out as the loser because now they must pay big bucks for a prescription drug. This is a power grab pure and simple. We used to think that dietary supplements would be safe from pharma because there was no value in a substance that can’t be patented. That type of thinking is dated. Drugs made from vitamins/minerals/herbs have patented usage claims and the dietary supplement industry better wake up before the rug is pulled from under them.

Dietary supplements must be granted protection from the action of pharma. AHPA’s Herbs of Commerce (an FDA-referenced book) could be used to formulate a master list of herbs falling under a grandfather clause. We are not attempting to prevent pharma from developing herb-based drugs. We are, however, trying to protect our industry and the interests of consumers.

ma – leading the economy of the future

In an article titled The end of the Wal-Mart era, MSN Money chronicles the paradigm shift from mass marketing to Internet and One-to-One Marketing.
But the Internet is transforming the retail definition of scale. The once-stunning compilation of 142,000 items found in a Wal-Mart supercenter doesn't seem so vast alongside the millions of products available on the Internet.

Pharmaceutical Petition Threatens Weight Loss Supplements

From the Dietary Supplement Information Bureau

GlaxoSmithKline, the second-largest pharmaceutical company in the world and makers of many prescription and over-the-counter drugs has petitioned the FDA to classify weight loss claims for dietary supplements as 'disease claims'. Many believe that this is an effort by GlaxoSmithKline, makers of alli™, an over-the-counter weight loss drug, to quash competition from the dietary supplement weight loss industry...

Great Skin with Skintelligence

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The right skin-care makes you one of the beholders. So if you weren’t born with great skin, don’t despair. We know genetics plays a large part here, but having imperfect skin doesn’t mean you can’t dramatically improve your skin’s appearance by caring for it well. One of my favorite skin-care products I recommend is the Skintelligence Line. This superior botanical skin-care line addresses the two main reasons for aging - stress and the environment. It’s an easy five-step treatment for the individual who doesn’t have time for an intense regiment.

My sister always struggled with her acne prone skin. She started using the Skintelligence Line and in six weeks or less the results were fabulous. After months had past, I noticed she had a certain glow about her skin; I questioned her about the glow. She smiled and said, you're not using the Cellular Perfecting Complex in the Skintelligence-Line, and she was right, I wasn’t.I started using the Cellular Perfecting Complex. Two weeks later, a Motives Consultant asked me about my skin’s glow, because she used the Skintelligence Line, of course, I smiled and said, you're probably not using the Cellular Perfecting Complex, and she wasn’t.

The moral of this story, once you have purchased the Skintelligence Line make sure you use everything.

From the News & Record

By Richard M. Barron

GREENSBORO — Market America, which sells and distributes such diverse items as T-shirts and DNA screening kits, is ready to make a mark on pop culture.

The Greensboro-based company is teaming up with a famous fashion star and creating a one-stop Web page offering news and information about music and products from music stars.

In the process, it hopes to combine the draw of celebrities with Market America's product sales system, which uses a combination of the Internet and individual sales representatives around the world.

It began Sunday, when the glamorous world of hip-hop fashion met Market America in an episode of Style Network 's "Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane."

The reality show about fashion model and businesswoman Kimora Lee Simmons featured her appearance earlier this year at a Market America convention in Miami to promote a line of cosmetics.

Study Finds Low Risk of Dietary Supplement and Prescription Drug Interactions

There is always great discussion regarding the combined/concurrent use of dietary supplements and prescription medications. We always do our best to let people know about known potential interactions via the product label warnings. Additionally, we encourage users to speak with their physicians or pharmacists about potential risks of interactions. We also suggest that our distributors purchase a subscription to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, which is available on unfranchise.com.

The American Botanical Council recently reported on a study published in the American Journal of Medicine, which found very little risk of harm from dietary supplement and prescription drug interactions. According the that study’s findings, sixty-eight percent of adverse interactions between supplements and prescription drugs arise from only 5 herbal extracts. See link below for the full report:

Great Testimonial for the new PetHealth Grooming Products

Hi everyone,
I received this testimonial this morning for the new PetHealth™ Grooming Products that I wanted to share with you.

This is from Ginny Wiltsey, Ginny is an animal rescuer for ARGNC (Animal Rescue Group of North Carolina):

Dear Market America,

I have to say I am thrilled with the new PetHealth Products.

I used the PetHealth Hypoallergenic Shampoo on my Yorkshire Terrier Chelsea (whose coat is long) and my blue Merle Australian Sheppard Keagan (whose coat is short) and I couldn't be happier with this product! The way the shampoo lathered was so impressive and made for easy shampooing and rinsing. Their coats looked and felt so soft, healthy and shiny. And what a great smell, it lasted for days!

The Pet Health Paw Balm is excellent!! Keagan's paws use to be rough and dry!!! But not anymore since I started using the Paw Balm. I was reluctant at first to use this product because of the thought that it may leave an oily greasy residue which could cause my dog to slip and possibly hurt himself as well as stain our carpet or furniture. The Paw Balm proved me wrong! No greasy residue at all! After just one week, his paw pads are now soft and supple.

I am here to tell other pet owners if you are looking for some great grooming products... try the PetHealth line it is great!

MA distributor featured in Time

A couple of days ago I wrote about ma distributor Julie Court who appeared on the front cover of the February 25 issue of Time. Powerline and maBlog writer Brandon Keel sat down with Julie for an exclusive interview about what it was like to be on the cover of Time, her thoughts on the problems facing educators today and why she became a Market America Distributor.

On paper, Julie Court seemed like the typical ma Distributor who became involved with the company part time, in large part due to her incredible results with the products. But when a recent issue of Time magazine hit with her photo on the front, she didn’t appear so typical after all.

“It is very surreal,” Julie said in an exclusive interview with Powerline magazine. “I shake my head every time I see it, because I just can’t believe it’s me on the cover of such a prominent publication.”

Julie was featured as the solo cover shot for the February 25, 2008 edition of Time, reaching more than 4 million households worldwide. Shown seated at a desk with her arms crossed and lesson plan opened, Julie’s serious look of concern was spelled out in bold red type positioned directly beside her photo, which read “How To Make Better Teachers.”

The article addressed two main issues public schools throughout the U.S. have struggled with for a long time – attracting high-quality teachers, and more importantly, retaining them. After just four years of teaching English at a middle school in New York, Julie has an intimate understanding of the challenges that ultimately contribute to teacher turnover.

“What people don’t realize about this job is that teaching is actually last on our list of things to do,” she said. “There are so many other responsibilities that take up time and energy before we even see the students – memos and administrative reports, bulletin boards to maintain, making copies and gathering materials, keeping in contact with parents, planning, grading papers…the list goes on and on.”

Another major concern – especially with urban, inner-city schools like the one Julie currently works at – is an extreme lack of resources combined with declining classroom conditions. Often times, the students are expected to get by with damaged or insufficient workstations, including desks and chairs that are simply falling apart. Many classrooms do not have a computer in sight, and what books Julie does have for her students to reference are either too outdated or vandalized.

“It’s a shame, because kids in urban schools have just as much intelligence and potential as other children, but the lack of equity in resources can have a major impact on their futures,” Julie said.

Unfortunately, this particular issue with educational funding – or a lack thereof – isn’t limited to just the classroom setting. In fact it starts at the front of the class, leaving much to be desired with the average starting salary of teachers nationwide. Time reported that out of the 3.2 million teachers in U.S. public schools, the average beginning salary was approximately $31,753 during 2005.

This combination of heavy workloads, extra responsibilities and low starting pay is all too familiar for Julie’s mother, Kathleen MacLeod, who currently teaches math at the high school level. But for Kathleen, she found hope to overcome such challenges in the most unlikeliest of places.

“Five years ago, a lady by the name of Debi Waldeck gave an incredible wellness lecture on a ski bus,” Kathleen recalled. “I was so impressed by her passion and knowledge that when one of her business partners, Deanna Aadland, contacted me for a follow-up, I began to use the products.”

Within two years, Kathleen recognized the other benefits Market America had to offer in addition to superior, market-driven products. She realized that the financial opportunity available through the UnFranchise business model was a perfect fit for her future plans.

Now, Kathleen is proud to report she has reached Executive Coordinator on her way to the next Pin Level! But for her, the real success story here is that she introduced Julie to the company as a result of her positive experiences with Market America.

“Like all parents, I want my daughter to be healthy and happy,” said Kathleen. “It is difficult to be happy under the financial and emotional challenges of teaching. After I became a Distributor and introduced Julie to the Isotonix line of products, it became obvious that she could also benefit financially from being a part of Market America.”

“Julie is a focused, determined individual with a great capacity to share and care – all qualities that have served her well in the classroom and should transfer to her future as an UnFranchise Owner!”

Although Julie is still fairly new to Market America, she has already made Isotonix a routine part of her busy day. In fact, without the extra energy boost these potent nutraceuticals provide, Julie admits she might not make it through the day.
