Overweight Pets

A study in 2007 by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, found that almost half of domestic cats and dogs are overweight or obese in the U.S. They found that 43% of dogs and 53% of cats are overweight and nearly 10% of dogs and 19% of cats are obese. Extra weight can lead to a variety of health problems including bone and joint discomfort, cardiovascular problems and changes in blood sugar.

It is important to remember that our pets were not designed to lie around and graze on food all day. A proper diet and exercise is very important in maintaining your pet’s weight and keeping them in optimal health. Exercise can be as simple as going for a walk in the evening when you get off work or tossing a ball down the hallway. Go to the park on the weekends (look for a park that caters to dogs – they typically have a fenced in area to let them run around and socialize with other dogs). Exercise allows pets to express their normal instinctive behavioral traits including inquisitive exploration and the use of scent, sight and hearing, tracking, stalking and play-fighting, greeting members of the same species and dealing with strange objects and dealing with animals from different species.

Excess weight puts more strain on your pet’s bones and joints, which can lead to joint discomfort. Couple that with the fact the joint health begins to decline as our pets age and the cold wintery months contribute to a decline in joint health, it is very important to maintain your pet’s joint health and comfort. Nearly 30% of dogs and cats need some form of joint support.
