I've used many pet shampoos over the years. Medicated, hypoallergenic, good smell, not-so-good smell, oatmeal shampoos for the coat and skin, you name it, I've probably tried it. I can honestly say I have never, ever used a pet shampoo this awesome. My dog, Bart, is a Yorkshire Terrier and they are famous for getting dry, flaky skin if you wash them too often and for getting oily hair like people if you don't wash them often enough. I gave him a bath with PetHealth's Hypoallergenic and a week later, his hair was still soft and silky and I could still smell the remnants of the fragrance! This is after he's been in and outside all week, too! And speaking of the fragrance, I have to tell you I am a fan of only a very few fragrances. My dog sleeps in the bed with me and frankly, I admit I have shooed him to other areas of the bed because of the "dog smell" that inevitably comes back rather soon after every other pet shampoo I've ever used. Tonight, a week after his last bath, the fragrance has lessened, but I can still smell it slightly and he definitely has no hint of the "hi mom, I've been playing outside today!" smell he usually has by this time. And his hair is still soft to the touch, too! This truly is a fabulous product and I will not be using anything else ever again!

Healthy Summer Barbeque Tips

Summer barbeques and picnics can wreak havoc on your waistline. A typical summer barbeque includes beer or soda, hot dogs and burgers, chips, cole slaw, potato salad and at least one dessert. Even if you only had one serving of each, that could easily tack on 1,800-2,500 Calories; almost a whole pound of extra weight! You can make sure there are some healthy options for your next picnic or barbeque with these easy tips:

-Instead of beef burgers, steaks, and sausages, stack your grill full of baked fish, turkey burgers, and grilled chicken. Just because it's healthy doesn't mean it has to be boring! By using sauces, herbs, and Spices, your food can be just as flavorful as the fattier cuts of meat without all the waistline-harming side effects.

-You can substitute white hamburger and hot dog buns for whole wheat buns.
Or, forgo buns altogether; just add your burger toppings and eat the burger with a knife and fork!

-Instead of mayonnaise-laden salads and slaws, try grilling some vegetables such as squash, zucchini, peppers, portabella mushrooms, and onions. You can add a heart-healthy vinaigrette dressing or some lemon juice to get lots of vitamins and flavor without all the fat.

-Instead of regular potato chips, try some soy chips or have fresh vegetables such as carrot sticks, raw string beans, squash, celery, cucumbers and a delicious low fat dip such as hummus to go along with your meal.

-Fat and calorie-laden desserts can be substituted with sliced fresh Fruit. Or, you can make a healthier version of your favorite dessert such as this recipe for fruit cobbler.

Sugar-Free Fresh Fruit Cobbler (Serves 6)
Ingredients:
* 1 quart fresh strawberries or 1 bag frozen, sliced
* 1 quart fresh blueberries or 1 bag frozen
* 1 tbsp whole wheat flour
* 1/4 cup butter
* 1 tbsp white sugar Splenda
* 1/4 cup brown sugar Splenda
* 1/4 cup steel cut oats

Directions:
Toss berries with the whole wheat flour and white sugar Splenda. Pour into glass baking dish. In a small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar Splenda and oats with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle mixture over berries. Add 2 pats butter, if desired. Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until berries are bubbling and topping is browned.

WebCenter Program Storming the World!

Well, I know it's been a while since my last post, sorry for leaving everyone hanging for so long. There are just so many exciting things happening with the WebCenter program and I wanted to put out another post now that I've been able to catch my breath.

April was a very exciting month (yeah, see how long it's been), we launched the WebCenter program in Hong Kong and Taiwan with HUGE success. In just a few short days in each country we were able to bring on over 1700 new WebCenter owners. The excitement for the WebCenter program and our system has been overwhelming, so much so, that we had to double our staff almost overnight, in order to accommodate this massive response. And the response hasn't just been on the side of the WebCenter owners, but, we've gotten a great response from prospective clients as well. The product specialists have been very busy every day with prospective clients evaluating our technology and quite a few companies in Taiwan and Hong Kong have already purchased the WebCenter website development system and are using it to give their business an effective, dynamic online web presence. It's incredibly exciting.

However, my trip actually started in Australia, and there too, we've got a lot of excitement. It started with our training school for the WebCenter trainers in Australia. Seeing their enthusiasm for the new training curriculum focused on helping WebCenter owners understand how easy it is to leverage the system we have in place to build their WebCenter business without any technical know-how, it was just so encouraging. Now, a month or two later, we've had a bunch of trainings conducted and the response has been extremely positive, both in the response from WebCenter owners having attended the classes and in sales themselves.


Which takes us right back here to North America, there are some really incredible advancements and additions to the WebCenter program on the horizon. Chinese language websites, oops, I almost forgot Chinese Boot Camp. Well, back in May, we went to Las Vegas for Chinese Boot Camp, and unveiled our plans for Chinese language websites, the ability for you to create a website which is all in Chinese, and all of the tools, menus, everything on the back-end, are also in Chinese. This was a gigantic hit. We had just under 600 people come to our booth and fill out a survey and 99% of them said this advancement would help their business grow, and that they would become a WebCenter owner as a result of this. Well, hang on to your hats folks, because we should have this available in just about two months. Not only that, but, as we grow with other markets like the Spanish-speaking market, we've created our system to be completely modular. All we need to do is translate our materials into Spanish, hire and train Spanish speaking staff, and our system will support the Spanish-speaking market as well.

Then we've got Global WebCenters and the release of the greatly anticipated version 4.0 of the WebCenter, and much much more. I'll be talking about all of these at Convention this year in Greensboro, so make sure you get yourself to the event to learn more.

So, in just a few months, we've added two new countries to the three we already have, we've created 4 new major advancements to the WebCenter program that should be released all by the end of this year, and we continue to show WebCenter owners how to build a successful WebCenter business by leveraging our simple system designed for the average person.

This has become an annual event and all the proceeds benefit the CFF. Placebo Deception for Children

A new placebo pill for children has hit the market. The pill, a cherry-flavored sugar tablet, is for children who think they need medicine. It’s called Obecalp, which is placebo spelled backward. Obecalp’s website introduces us to the reassuring power of placebo -

“Hi. Welcome to the Placebo Store. I'm Jen. I am a mommy. It's what I love. Whether it's a kiss or a big hug, the magic happens immediately. This is the power of placebo.”

Gosh, when I experienced childhood distress, my mommy gave me a hug and said it would be alright. It never entered her mind to use deception instead of nurturing when dealing with a child awakened in the night from a bad dream. She explained that if something bad happens in a dream, it won’t happen in real life. Now parents can reach for relief in a bottle of Obecalp and say, “Here you go, take two of these; those scary monsters will disappear and you’ll sleep through the night.”

How ethical is it to teach children that the only way they can get better is by taking a pill? Is this the inevitable effect of a Ritalin-filled world? I don't know whether this is good use of placebo or not. The pills will make some kids feel better and really, how much difference is there between the “kiss and make it better” approach and Obecalp? Nonetheless, Obecalp may increase children’s psychological need for medical intervention, when they might be better off developing tolerance for life's minor aches and pains.

Wine shows new promise vs. aging

NEW YORK - Red wine may be much more potent than was thought in extending the human lifespan, researchers say in a new report that is likely to give impetus to the rapidly growing search for longevity drugs.

The study is based on dosing mice with resveratrol, an ingredient of some red wines. Some scientists are already taking resveratrol in capsule form, but others believe it is far too early to take the drug, especially using wine as its source, until there is better data on its safety and effectiveness.

Study Finds Omega-3 DHA Shows Promise Against Eczema

Almost everyone has heard of the cardiovascular protective affects of omega-3 fatty acids and their influence on reducing triglyceride levels. Of these unsaturated fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the most well known and researched. What many people do not realize are the number of other health related benefits the omega 3s, whether individually or together, have to offer. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be effective in improving the symptoms of dry eye, bipolar disorder and depression, and cognitive function and behavior of children with ADHD. They have also been shown to reduce the risk of age-related maculopathy, stroke, and complications during recovery from angioplasty and heart transplant surgery. Omega-3 supplementation also appears to improve weight loss, blood glucose and insulin levels, and the retention of bone density.

In a recent study published in the British Journal of Dermatology (2008), a team of researchers recorded the effects of DHA supplementation on atopic eczema. According to the study’s finding, measures of eczema improved by 23% over eight weeks of supplementation. Additionally, a significant reduction in markers of inflammation and improvement in immune response were also noted. According to these results omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, may be an effective treatment for atopic eczema. See link below for the full report:

I had the pleasure of participating in the annual 2008 Start! Guilford Heart and Stroke Walk here in Greensboro this past Saturday for the third straight year. This 5K non-competitive walking event is designed to bring public awareness to physical activity and a heart-healthy lifestyle, while at the same time raise the critical dollars needed to fund the life-saving mission of the American Heart Association.

Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. The association invested more than $543 million in fiscal year 2005-06 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.

To help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke, practicing better lifestyle habits is essential. Healthier food habits can help you reduce your risk for heart attack. Choosing the right foods to eat and preparing foods in a more healthy way are just a few steps to creating a more healthful eating plan. Study Shows Pycnogenol Naturally Reduces Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Diabetics

What's the deal with cell phones?

I bought a new cell phone last week. I was reading the user guide and other information that came along with it, and I was surprised to find that in five different places in all of this literature, were warnings that cell phones may be harmful to your health. Perhaps these warnings have always been there and I was oblivious to them before, nonetheless, I noticed them. Of course, it didn't come right out and say that they were dangerous, it was the same FDA babble, "not proven to be harmful… yada, yada, yada." "Weight Loss Aids Bought On Internet Might Harm Your Heart."

I am sure some of you have read the article on weight loss supplement ingredients being dangerous. Most herbs enjoy a remarkably good safety record but on rare occasion, contraindications and interactions with drugs and/or foods do occur. News outlets and pharmaceutical companies are using this fact to arrive at a totally misleading conclusion, creating fear and uncertainty in the minds of consumers.

The accusation that some of the ingredients in weight loss supplements present a safety risk is based on searching engine queries (such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) looking for one single reported “association between the ingredients and cardiac problems.” Conveniently, no further research or testing is done on the validity of the reported issue. Most of these reports are singular occurrences and have not, and most likely will not, occur in any of the millions of customers that use supplements. Another point is that the article was published in conjunction with a pharmaceutical company that is in direct competition with the weight loss supplement industry.

As you all know our supplements list possible contraindications directly on the label as well as urge you to consult your physician before use.

Upon discussion of this weight loss ingredient issue with Dr. Mark Lange, he brought up a very good point…Maybe the cardiologists doing this study should exert some effort in their field of expertise, where this month’s Lancet reports 800,000 people died unnecessarily and half a million major strokes were caused by taking beta blockers, the cornerstone treatment for heart disease since the 1970s. Chinese Boot Camp 2008

We just got back from Chinese Boot Camp in Las Vegas and must share with all of you that it was a spectacular event! The excitement and energy of the attendees was incredible!

SO many leaders put a lot of effort into making this one of the best boot camps ever! There were 37 speakers throughout the weekend that each worked hard to create an effective and exciting presentation for the event. There were over 50 volunteers throughout the weekend that helped with logistics like registration, handing out surveys and monitoring doors.

There were 12 very busy leaders on the planning committee, many of whom participated in conference calls at all hours of the night while traveling to Hong Kong and Taiwan, to make sure that this event was the best boot camp ever! There were two very committed gentlemen that volunteered to help with the production of the event for the entire two days.

We want to say thank you to all of you that worked hard to make this event such a success! It would NOT have happened without you!!

Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane Update

So by now, I'm sure many of you have caught Market America on the Kimora Lee Simmons show launching Fabulosity at Leadership School in Miami. Canadian Natural Health Products are Under Immediate Threat

Many Canadians rely upon natural health products for their health. These products are endangered and consumers need to act now to save them.

Since 2004 when the Natural Health Product Regulations were introduced, natural health products have been increasingly threatened. The new Regulations were Health Canada’s response to consumer demands for the government to protect their access to natural health products. The Regulations have had the opposite effect. To “legally” sell a health product the new Regulations impose a licensing requirement. The problem is that 60% of licence applications have failed. These have been the “easy” applications. Expectations are that 70-75% of applications will fail. For the NHP Community this means that 75% of NHPs we rely upon for our health will become illegal.

Is the FDA controlled by big Pharma?

A couple days ago I told you about pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline’s attempt to classify weight loss claims for dietary supplements as disease claims. Many believe this is an effort to quash competition from the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Mark Lange, Market America’s director of quality control, made this observation about the report…

I’m piecing together what is a disturbing trend – big pharma influencing the FDA to declare certain dietary supplements as drugs. Many dietary supplements are effective in the treatment of diseases (although we are prohibited from making such claims). Pharma develops a drug based upon historical use of a dietary supplement and then petitions FDA to ban dietary supplements containing that ingredient because they are now drugs and cannot be sold without a prescription. Case in point – red rice yeast. Red rice yeast in the past reduced cholesterol levels because it contained one of the statin drugs, namely lovastatin. The FDA made an administrative decision that this dietary supplement was a regulable drug, and thus removed it from the unregulated shelves of the health food store. Now resveratrol and a particular form of vitamin B6 are under similar review.

Ultimately, well-informed consumers of dietary supplements come out as the loser because now they must pay big bucks for a prescription drug. This is a power grab pure and simple. We used to think that dietary supplements would be safe from pharma because there was no value in a substance that can’t be patented. That type of thinking is dated. Drugs made from vitamins/minerals/herbs have patented usage claims and the dietary supplement industry better wake up before the rug is pulled from under them.

Dietary supplements must be granted protection from the action of pharma. AHPA’s Herbs of Commerce (an FDA-referenced book) could be used to formulate a master list of herbs falling under a grandfather clause. We are not attempting to prevent pharma from developing herb-based drugs. We are, however, trying to protect our industry and the interests of consumers.
