Build your business by getting involved
This Saturday, Greensboro hosted its "Amaizing Pet Adventure," a day of fun for families and their pets. They held pet adoptions, rabies shots, micro-chipping and a dog show for "normal" dogs that had been rescued. Our own Brandi Quinn was one of the judges. At the "Amaizing Pet Adventure," Market America got a lot of good PR (as soon as I figure out how to upload the media links, I'll post a reply.)Market America co-sponsored the event and a local Market America Customer Manager, Donna Smith, sold PetHealth™ products and networked with pet owners and local pet businesses.
I know many of you are probably wondering where to start when it comes to selling PetHealth. Vets can be less receptive to supplements (more so than some doctors even) and you may find it challenging to get the word (and the products) out there. But fret not, local groomers, dog shows, adoption fairs and rescue events are just a few ways that you can network with pet owners and local small business owners.

Interesting Comparison (604 vs. 450,000)
As you may or may not know, the Food and Drug Administration implemented the Adverse Event Reports (AER) system last year. In an effort to protect the end consumer, this process requires manufacturers of dietary supplements to report all AERs to the FDA, much like pharmaceutical companies do. Since the AER process began, there have been 604 adverse event reports submitted. To put things in perspective, 450,000 AERs were received in 2007 from prescription pharmaceuticals.

Why do women live longer than men?
So, who lives longer, men or women? Well, according to Tom Perls, founder of the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University, across the industrialized world, women still live 5 to 10 years longer than men. Among people over 100 years old, 85% are women.
Women live longer than men. It is unfair, but true. The question is, why?
Thomas Perls offers two reasons: one is the evolutionary drive to pass on her genes; the other is the need to stay healthy enough to rear as many children as possible. A man’s purpose is simply to carry genes that ensure longevity and pass them on to his children. All right, so that’s a little history for you from our caveman past. Just like Rambo or any Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, men are supercharged with testosterone. Aside from forcing us to watch frenzied flicks like The Matrix Reloaded, the testes-produced hormone also triggers riskier behavior and aggression, and increases levels of harmful cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein), raising the risk of heart disease or stroke. Meanwhile, the female hormone estrogen karate-chops harmful cholesterol and raises “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein).
There was also something else I stumbled upon while searching to find out why our male counterparts don’t live as long as us. One important reason is the big delay — and advantage — women have over men in terms of cardiovascular disease, like heart attack and stroke. Women develop these problems usually in their 70s and 80s, about 10 years later than men, who develop them in their 50s and 60s. A Singapore study found that while men were diagnosed with chronic illness two years earlier than women, women were also disabled by their illnesses four years later. Men more often engage in riskier habits like drinking alcohol and using recreational drugs, as well as eating to excess. And the stereotype about men being averse to seeing a doctor on a regular basis? Studies have shown it's true.
We all want the men in our lives to live as long as possible – whether it be our fathers, uncles, grandfathers, husband or significant other. So if your goal is to be the first 100-year old man in your family tree, here are some things to consider:
1) While our genetic disposition makes many diseases unavoidable, men can put off obvious baddies by not smoking, eating the right foods, exercising properly and living a balanced life.
2) Men always seem to be leaner than women. We all know how to maintain our weight, but shedding excess fat is not as easy as you think. Recent studies suggest low-impact cardio exercises like walking or crash diets don’t cut it. The only way to burn it off is to make yourself sweat!
3) Roll with the punches, or don’t sweat the small stuff. Yeah, we’ve all heard that. But when you’re really stressed out, that goes through one ear and out the other. But there are some advantages to reducing your stress levels. Tap into your stress in hard exercise like running, weight-lifting or martial arts.
One more tip: Break your day into bite-size bits. Divide your workload into tasks, and reward yourself with each completed goal. Stress is insidious. As we all know, it can wrap us up unaware and carry us on adrenaline for days or weeks at a time.
If you want to try something else, curcumin may be a good alternative to keep you living lively and vicariously. Curcumin is employed mostly as an antioxidant, though it was traditionally used to promote stomach and joint comfort. The immune-balancing activity of curcumin has been demonstrated through multiple mechanisms to support normal COX-2 and NF-KappaB levels in the body.
The neuroprotective properties of curcumin are among the most studied. Curcumin has been designated as a ‘strong candidate’ for the promotion of neurological health and cognitive function. Curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier and support the normal uptake of amyloid-beta in the brain. This supports the brain's memory and learning abilities as we age. Another neuroprotective property of curcumin is its ability to promote normal levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase in the brain. This can help to maintain the health of neurological tissues.

Are you taking a multivitamin?
If you are anything like me, you are busy. Really busy. Every day I have great intentions—I plan to fix myself a healthy, hearty breakfast, bring my lunch to work, eat at least 7 servings of fruits and vegetables…. Honestly though, most days don’t go according to plan. Whole grains, 5 servings of veggies, 2-4 servings of fruit, 2-3 servings of dairy…. and making sure you get a variety! Having a well rounded diet rich in fruits and vegetables is really important but I like knowing that I’m filling in the gaps everyday by supplementing with a multivitamin.
Sometimes I need a little reminder about nutritional basics and it goes a little something like this:
- French fries don't count towards your vegetable servings (and neither does ketchup)
- Strawberry daiquiris don’t count as fruit (but it would be so awesome if they did!)
- The lettuce on a burrito isn’t exactly a “nutrient dense” food item (I bet we'd all be nutritional superstars if it was!)
So, when faced with the aforementioned harsh realities of nutrition, I’m so glad I have a multivitamin!

The Joys of Aging, har
I don't know if you guys share my penchant for an occasional overindulgence, but when I do it usually takes the form of this. And because I like a little kick with my meals, I usually ask for these.
My friends, this was a recipe for disaster. For starters, I'm not fifteen anymore and no longer enjoy the metabolism of my youth. (man, those were the good ol' days) I'm an aging ex-athlete who needs to make sure he doesn't get any bigger. Needless to say, I shouldn't be ordering anything that has "Giant" in its name no matter what. Much less one with extra jalapenos.
But wait, there's one more stupid thing! Did I mention it was the only meal I had yesterday? Yes, good decisions all around, thank you. Other than scarfing down a breakfast bar first thing in the morning, I skipped lunch and waited until about 4 o'clock to eat (when I was already famished and ready to self destruct).
Yes, a boneheaded dietary triple play. (I'm waiting for one of our Transitions™ gurus to come over here and give me a scolding; it's only a matter of time.)
Naturally, I began to feel miserable immediately after my meal. Not sure if it was simply my stomach getting upset from the peppers, or the onset of another deadly sin that comes from eating too much (or both, natch), but I was pretty unhappy and knew I would be in trouble unless I took corrective action.
Desperate, I took a capful of this.
Folks, I'm a bit of a skeptic and tend to only be persuaded by personal experience. And suffice it to say, I'm now a believer.

Favorite Health and Nutrition products
Like most of you, I'm a product of our products. Almost every morning begins with an Isotonix® cocktail (even before my first cuppa, which is unheard of in my household. Foolish is he or she who tries to talk to me before coffee!) and my colleagues frequently chuckle at the constantly-replenished stash of Transitions™ meals (as well as bottles of Omega III and Glucosatrin™) that are always handy at my desk.
So I'm just curious to know what YOUR Health and Nutrition routine consists of? Do you have a particular preferred cocktail blend? (personally, I like the flavor of Acai mixed with the multivitamin, b-complex, multimineral and/or complete greens, but try to rotate in all the others, too) Have you "mixed and matched" any others with great success?
There's no real corporate agenda here; I'm just looking for a few good ideas to help me switch up my routine and try all the great Health and Nutrition products we have here at Market America. Please feel free to include your suggestions in the comment section below - thanks!

JD: I had NO desire to look at this business when I was approached the first 10 times. Isn't it amazing how some people "know" what this is when they won’t even take the time to look? I was sure this was some multilevel marketing company or “get rich quick” scheme so I wouldn't look. Once I was sold on OPC-3® though, it softened me up about the business and International Convention sealed my fate.
PL: What did you do for a living previously?
JD: My background was always in health care. At age 17 I took night classes and started working for the City of Buffalo, NY in emergency services a year later. I went to work with terminally ill children and worked nights in the ER and ICU at a hospital near my hometown near Buffalo. I then switched gears from trauma to chiropractic and had a chiropractic practice until ma retired me in 2001.
PL: What were some of the challenges you have overcome and how did you overcome them?
JD: I love this question because so many people think I had it easier because I am a doctor, when in reality many times it was an obstacle. Many people said that since they weren't doctors, they wouldn't be able to build their business like me. But I was uncomfortable approaching my patients with the business so I had to come up with creative ways to get them to ask me about the business. I coaxed my prospects into approaching me! I always train people to use their challenges to make them stronger. It's just like a bodybuilder using weights to get stronger – they use that resistance to their benefit.
PL: What has the company allowed you to do that you probably wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity for?
JD: I have traveled more than most people will in their entire lives. I have been able to take my family on vacations. I have been able to wake up when I’m done sleeping (no alarm clock) for the last seven years. I have met some of the most genuine, wonderful people in the world. But, most importantly, I have been able to look at thousands of people and see the look in their eyes when, for the first time in years, they actually have hope again. There is no paycheck better than that.

Isotonix Prenatal Multivitamin: A nutritional insurance policy
Any women who is pregnant or even thinking about getting pregnant, whether it’s this week or a year from now, should strongly consider investing in a prenatal supplement. However, there are some questions that every woman asks themselves when considering becoming pregnant and taking a prenatal.Do I really need to take a prenatal vitamin?
If you're very tuned in to nutrition and regularly eat a broad range of foods, including meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, your diet will provide almost all the nutrients you and your baby need. Think of it as an insurance policy to make sure you're getting the right amount of certain important nutrients during pregnancy.
What's in a vitamin supplement that I can't get from food?
Folic Acid: Folic acid is one of the most important nutrients found in prenatal vitamins, and is an essential nutrient during pregnancy. In addition to being important for the growth of the unborn child, Folic Acid has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Folic acid is a vitamin that promotes normal cell replication and growth. Folic acid supports the normal formation of building blocks of DNA, the body’s genetic information, and building blocks of RNA needed for protein synthesis in all cells. Therefore, rapidly growing tissues, such as those of a fetus, and rapidly regenerating cells, like red blood cells and immune cells, have a high need for folic acid. This vitamin promotes the development of the fetal central nervous system and healthful diets containing adequate folic acid may reduce a woman’s risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord defect. However, routine nutrition does not always supply enough folic acid to meet the requirements of a pregnant woman. Additionally, folic acid intake is necessary in the months before pregnancy and during the first trimester.

Iron: Iron is an important mineral found in prenatal vitamins, and is responsible for helping the mother and the baby’s blood to carry oxygen. Iron deficiencies can lead to severe birth defects for the baby. As an essential mineral, iron is part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of the blood. The demand for iron, essential for blood formation, is also significantly increased during pregnancy because the mother's blood volume increases, and the fetal red blood cells have to be developed. In order to support fetal tissue growth, blood volume and contents must grow to help feed these tissues, including red blood cells. Further, about one-third of the mother’s iron storage will be passed on to her developing baby in order to form its blood and to be stored for future use.
Is there anything that I won't get in a prenatal supplement?
Calcium is one of the nutrients that you won't find a full day's supply of in your prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement. Most prenatal vitamins contain between 100 and 200 milligrams (mg) of calcium, but some don't contain any. That's because calcium is a particularly bulky mineral, and the pills are already big enough!
The amount of calcium you need during pregnancy is about 1,000 mg per day — the same amount you need when you're not pregnant. (If you're 18 or younger, you need 1,300 mg per day.) But it's even more crucial that you get the recommended amount during pregnancy because you'll need to replace the calcium your growing baby is getting from your own bones. Skimping on calcium now increases your risk for osteoporosis later in life. Luckily, there are many ways to get this mineral. For example, a cup of milk and a container of yogurt each contain about 300 to 350 mg. If you can't stomach dairy products, you can get your calcium from separate supplements (Isotonix Calcium Plus).

Aging, Exercise, and Supplements
As the Health and Nutrition Manager, I am always researching new and exciting products on the market. I read numerous articles and journals to stay abreast of the trends, especially in the Health and Nutrition Market. I also receive email newsletters almost every day from NutraIngredients, Science and Nutrition Research and Food NavigatorUSA. Needless to say, I am always reading something! Here is something that I stumbled across that I thought I would share!

According to a Manchester Metropolitan University study, a balance of carbohydrate and protein supplements and a well planned low-resistance exercise routine could go a long way to keep senior citizens healthy and fit into their retirement years. The study, reported on by Science Daily News, was the first to chart the effects of a combined supplement and exercise regimen for an exclusively older population. The experiment charted health benefits over a three month period, comparing high- and low-resistance exercises. While all test groups receiving supplements increased muscle size and strength, it appears that low-resistance exercises were the most beneficial to participants.
"Maintaining muscle performance and arresting muscle wastage can offer older people real improvements in their quality of life," says Dr. Gladys Pearson, who led the research. "Though we still need to assess precisely what level of exercise gives the best results, we believe we've shown that regular low-resistance exercise complemented by the right nutritional supplements could boost the well-being of the UK's ageing population."

All new WebCenter Version 4.0
Well, it's been a while since I was able to post, but, with all this new stuff coming out for the WebCenter program, it's been keeping things around here crazy busy. I've got so many exciting things to share, this may actually be my longest post ever.
So, for starters, we just launched the most comprehensive update to the WebCenter program in almost 5 years - version 4.0 of the WebCenter - was a complete re-envisioning of not just the tool for clients, but the entire platform.
From the underlying technology to the user interface, we've changed it all, and I've gotta say, it's incredible looking, but, the changes aren't just cosmetic, the functioning of the technology is completely different, extremely intuitive, and positioned to definitely knock the socks off of any of your prospective clients who take a walkthrough with our Product Specialists to guide them.
Here's a couple of highlights on the technology:
The first language we decided to go with - Traditional Chinese. So, not only are all layouts and content in 4.0 available in English and Chinese, so that the client's website be built in English or Chinese on the front-end, but the entire back end of the system can be in Chinese as well, including all the menus, contextual help, the online manual, all the tools that come with the system. But it doesn't stop there, we also have Mandarin and Cantonese speaking customer care for your clients, as well as Mandarin and Cantonese speaking Product Specialists and Design Center support. It's all there.
And I don't mean to sound like a late night infomercial, but wait there's more! We've also come out with a direct integration piece to allow any WebCenter website to become a Partner Store - provided that they fit the model of being a Partner Store. So, any website clients who are selling goods online through their website and servicing either the USA or Canada or both,
can apply to become a partner store right from your WebCenter under the Partner Stores tab! How cool is that. Now you can offer your clients the ability to partner with Market America and have Market America drive traffic to their site or they can sign up as an MAMerchant and become fully integrated into the universal shopping system and have their products indexed in the Google search on the portal and basically get a second storefront. So not only would they be getting sales from their existing WebCenter website, but, they'd be getting sales through the Portal and having both website and portal feed each other. The opportunities for businesses are huge. But, here's the best thing, by doing this, you've already exposed the business owner to the power of Market America.

PL: You are being featured because most individuals at this stage in their lives are not thinking about going into business for themselves. Why did you decide to become involved with ma?
HP: As a child, both of my parents always ran their own traditional businesses. My brother and I realized the significance of writing our own checks and controlling the value of our time. However, when I finished school at such a young age, there was a lot of risk associated with being a business owner. But I knew I would never begin my career as a top executive in the corporate world. Therefore, I began from the bottom, building my resume and engaging in interview after interview. I did land an outside sales job and thought I was going to build my way to the top. I quickly realized the writing was on the wall and my job was never going to get me ahead of the game. Within six months of answering to a boss, commuting long distances sunrise to sunset in a dog-eat-dog environment, I was sure I needed to find something else. My mother, Bonnie Philo, had already begun pioneering ma and had matched her previous business income within the first two years. At the same time, my father, Scott Philo, partnered with her and also matched his income with his insurance business. They proved to me that ma was both viable and profitable.
PL: Did you have any concerns or apprehensions when you were considering this opportunity? If so, please explain.
HP: I didn’t have any concerns or apprehensions because of the overwhelming success stories I was witness to and the accomplishments of my own parents as Executive Directors and members of the Million Dollar Club. Plus, I began building my UnFranchise Business part time while continuing to work my full-time job. There was no risk, I just needed to take a leap of faith and take responsibility for my own success!
PL: How does it feel to know that you are on your way to earning $1 million through Market America?
HP: Over the past five years, I have never looked back. Market America has become my professional, ongoing, leveraged income stream. With the help of many mentors, including my own parents, Elizabeth Weber, as well as JR, Loren and the Corporate Team, I am on my way to financial freedom. There is no feeling like it, to also offer others an option – a plan B, a way to secure their financial independence. There is now a level playing field for all, regardless of background, age or wealth. Both the products and the personal growth have changed my life for the better. To truly have control of my time and have no one put a price tag on what I am worth is priceless!
PL: If you weren’t an UnFranchise Owner with Market America, what would you probably be doing?
HP: If I had not built my ma business, I would have probably started my own business traditionally and become a slave, working 80 hours per week tied to a huge mortgage. On the horizon, I will be getting married and looking forward to starting a family. I will now be able to spend quality and quantity time with those who I love, where I want, doing what I want. This business has truly been a blessing!!!

Within six months of answering to a boss, commuting long distances sunrise to sunset in a dog-eat-dog environment, I was sure I needed to find something else. My mother, Bonnie Philo, had already begun pioneering ma and had matched her previous business income within the first two years. At the same time, my father, Scott Philo, partnered with her and also matched his income with his insurance business. They proved to me that ma was both viable and profitable.
PL: Did you have any concerns or apprehensions when you were considering this opportunity? If so, please explain.
HP: I didn’t have any concerns or apprehensions because of the overwhelming success stories I was witness to and the accomplishments of my own parents as Executive Directors and members of the Million Dollar Club. Plus, I began building my UnFranchise Business part time while continuing to work my full-time job. There was no risk, I just needed to take a leap of faith and take responsibility for my own success!
PL: How does it feel to know that you are on your way to earning $1 million through Market America?
HP: Over the past five years, I have never looked back. Market America has become my professional, ongoing, leveraged income stream. With the help of many mentors, including my own parents, Elizabeth Weber, as well as JR, Loren and the Corporate Team, I am on my way to financial freedom. There is no feeling like it, to also offer others an option – a plan B, a way to secure their financial independence. There is now a level playing field for all, regardless of background, age or wealth. Both the products and the personal growth have changed my life for the better. To truly have control of my time and have no one put a price tag on what I am worth is priceless!
PL: If you weren’t an UnFranchise Owner with Market America, what would you probably be doing?
HP: If I had not built my ma business, I would have probably started my own business traditionally and become a slave, working 80 hours per week tied to a huge mortgage. On the horizon, I will be getting married and looking forward to starting a family. I will now be able to spend quality and quantity time with those who I love, where I want, doing what I want. This business has truly been a blessing!!!
